About
A few years ago I wanted to introduce a reward chart to my then five year old son. We’d been having an on-going, running battle about “cleaning your teeth”, and let’s just say that I was losing the battle (but I was determined to win the war!)
We set about buying sheets of card, glue and stickers and we managed to piece together a serviceable reward chart and used it with great success. I wanted to put together a few more charts to tackle a few other issues, and my son was excited to use another chart.
Now I’m not the most creative person and like a lot of parents today I’m always struggling to find spare time, so I thought I would buy a set of reward charts that firstly, my son would want to use, and secondly, could be used more than once. I searched the web, I looked in the yellow pages, I visited bookshops, and while I found a few rudimentary charts, they were not what I wanted our reward chart to be – that is, large, colorful, re-usable, varied and interactive. I realized that I could go on searching for what I wanted or I could just make my own (In the process I found that there were others who liked our charts and were more than willing to pay for them).
At the time my son was really into pirates, so that was the first theme we started with. From there with the help of friends and family (and input from lots of children!) we came up with a variety of themes that would suit both girls and boys, and suit a variety of age groups from toddlers, to pre-primary, to pre-adolescent children. That was our starting point. Next came the research and hard work.
Over the next couple of years I set about researching the psychology behind the concept of rewarding children and using reward charts. I consulted with graphic artists to help create a series of reward charts that would be exciting and fun for children to use, and which would utilize some of the concepts and foundations that I had learned were important to behavior modification.
The prototype reward charts were tested, and then tested again. Finally after much research, consultation, conversation, creation and testing we have come up with a product that will hopefully excite both children and parents, will be effective, will be durable and will be great value. Parents and carers who are looking for (as I once was) beautifully designed, colorful, re-usable, durable and interactive reward charts need not look any further.
The demand we have experienced for our reward charts over the last couple of years has taken us by surprise (our thanks and gratitude to our customers), and we have extended the range of behavior modification tools to also include our very well received Star Coins Token Economy.
At RewardingKids.com it is our aim to live up to the double meaning our name suggests: that is to reward and recognize our children, and to experience the joy of having rewarding children.
